contrary to popular belief, metaphysical does not mean meta-physical (higher or beyond physical). nor did the term originate that way. look in any introductory text to metaphysics and its likely you will find the etymology of metaphysics coming from "ta meta ta physika," meaning "the [writings] after the physics" as thats where they literally were. they were the section of aristotles writings after the section on physics (not the same as modern physics). so to juxtapose physical and metaphysical is mistaken.



the main branch of metaphysics is ontology: the study of being or existence. so antonyms to metaphysics might have something to do with non-existence or non-being. personally, i think the best antonym to metaphysical would be "non-real" ("unreal" having different connotations).



ironically, the validity of metaphysics had been largely dismissed earlier in the last century, in favor of empiricism in academic disciplines. much of metaphysics is non-empirical (hence the current tendency to contrast the metaphysical and the physical). we are still seeing the effects of this preference for empirical disciplines today, (although metaphysics seems to be slowly making a come-back). as a result, the term "metaphysical" has become synonymous with my suggested antonym "non-real." nonetheless, i think this is an erroneous idiosyncrasy of our current society and "non-existent" and "non-real" are the best antonyms for "metaphysical."What are some antonyms of the word "metaphysical"?
It depends on how you define the word. Everyone's metaphysics is different, not just because of differing experiences but also because the word takes on a life of its own with respect to your beliefs.
