I need antonyms for these words please?
My daughter has homework that I just can't figure it out.
She has to use these words: Content, Rude, Shy, Terrified, Boisterous, Stupendous, Cantankerous and Good.
And the 5 words to match them to are: Honest, Careful, Best, Reduces and Interesting.
If anyone can help matching the antonyms together I would greatly appreciate it.I need antonyms for these words please?
There must be some mistake.
I can not see in the first group any antonyms (opposites) to words in the second group.
You have 8 words (none of which are synonyms) and 5 presumed
antonyms. Besides the fact that none of the 5 is an antonym of any
of the 8, the disparity in numbers should tell you that this assignment
is screwed up. I need antonyms for these words please?
None of these words match. You may need to check the homework again.I need antonyms for these words please?
There is something wrong there: for a start you can't find separate antonyms for eight words from a list of five words.
Just as suggestions if she wants something to show at class:
'content' - 'discontented'
'rude' - 'polite' ( or 'elegant' in a slightly different sense of 'rude' )
'shy' - 'bold'
'terrified' - 'fearless' ( or 'terrifying', perhaps)
'boisterous' - 'reserved' ( or 'withdrawn' perhaps)
'cantankerous' - 'ameliorative' ( or 'even-tempered', perhaps )
'good' - 'bad'
It is a mess of a question, and as it stands no one should be expected to answer it.
[ It does strike me as quite important that pupils learn for themselves that teachers and parents aren't infallible. That is part of growing up. ]

What are 3 words that could be considered antonyms of "culinary"?
"Culinary" is an adjective, meaning, more or less, "of cooking". It can't have an antonym as it is not opposable, neither by counteraction, opposition, negation, nor reversal. To put it more graphically: you can't anti-cook, un-cook or de-cook in any non-metaphorical way, so noone has ever bothered to invent words for these things.
In fact, the question would make quite a good koan. What are 3 words that could be considered antonyms of "culinary"?
Well, it's a stretch, because there are no precise antonyms. "Culinary" has to do with cooking, so if you want to use "eating" as an opposite, then "eating" could be one, "gustatory" another, and then "tasting."What are 3 words that could be considered antonyms of "culinary"?

Evokes --Synonym = elicits
--Antonym = expunges
Starkly --Synonym = harshly
--Antonym = softly
Etched --Synonym = engraved
--Antonym = embossed
Here are the answers as I see them: (Word: synonym; antonym)
Evokes: elicits; expunges
Etched:, engraved; embossed
(depends on what sense of etching they mean. If they refer only to removing material to make a design, then embossed would be the opposite, because it uses a raised design.)
Starkly: harshly; softly

I don't think there are any.
Maybe it's last name?
I searched thesaurus site below, and found no antonym. If anything , you can try to see if any of those selective synonyms will have an antonym which will fit.
I don't really think there is any. Not everything has a clear opposite.
A antonym means opposite...........Surname means your given last name.............So you really have to tell what the last name is in order to give an antonym for it....Understand ?

What are antonyms for the word RESOURCE?
I need antonyms for resource. Besides the word product. What are antonyms for the word RESOURCE?
Most nouns do not have antonyms. Adjectives have antonyms (cold hot, tall short, bland spicy, clear dark, etc.) Resource has no quality and it takes a quality to have an opposite quality--that is what an antonym is. Are you sure you are not looking for synonyms? Why would you exclude product? Product is not an antonym, it is a synonym! Are you really looking for synonyms? You should have said so. I wrote all this thinking you were really confused. You're not. You're just wrong.

Nyah! LOLCan you help me think of Antonyms for these 2 words?
1) Stick
2) Air power :DCan you help me think of Antonyms for these 2 words?
There is no antonym to boomerang. It's an object. That's like saying there's an antonym to a car. The same applies to hydroelectric power.
In order for there to be a proper antonym, the word must be part of a binary system (i.e. two terms, such as alive/dead, black/white, etc...). These terms are not parts of binary systems, and therefore possess no opposites in any logical sense.
Tell your teacher that.

What are some antonyms of the word "metaphysical"?
That isn't the word "physical"?What are some antonyms of the word "metaphysical"?
Mystical?
contrary to popular belief, metaphysical does not mean meta-physical (higher or beyond physical). nor did the term originate that way. look in any introductory text to metaphysics and its likely you will find the etymology of metaphysics coming from "ta meta ta physika," meaning "the [writings] after the physics" as thats where they literally were. they were the section of aristotles writings after the section on physics (not the same as modern physics). so to juxtapose physical and metaphysical is mistaken.
the main branch of metaphysics is ontology: the study of being or existence. so antonyms to metaphysics might have something to do with non-existence or non-being. personally, i think the best antonym to metaphysical would be "non-real" ("unreal" having different connotations).
ironically, the validity of metaphysics had been largely dismissed earlier in the last century, in favor of empiricism in academic disciplines. much of metaphysics is non-empirical (hence the current tendency to contrast the metaphysical and the physical). we are still seeing the effects of this preference for empirical disciplines today, (although metaphysics seems to be slowly making a come-back). as a result, the term "metaphysical" has become synonymous with my suggested antonym "non-real." nonetheless, i think this is an erroneous idiosyncrasy of our current society and "non-existent" and "non-real" are the best antonyms for "metaphysical."What are some antonyms of the word "metaphysical"?
It depends on how you define the word. Everyone's metaphysics is different, not just because of differing experiences but also because the word takes on a life of its own with respect to your beliefs.
I could say the concept of force is a delusion, and remain staunchly defensive of that idea. Why does it need an opposite? What I believe the world to be, that is my metaphysics. What are some antonyms of the word "metaphysical"?
As an "adjective" -
Well, to me "metaphysical" means 'above or beyond the physical', so the opposite idea could be "empiric" or "scientific."
Concrete, material, objective, physical, real, solid, substantial are all antonyms!
Material, corporeal, tangible, earthly, substantial

the main branch of metaphysics is ontology: the study of being or existence. so antonyms to metaphysics might have something to do with non-existence or non-being. personally, i think the best antonym to metaphysical would be "non-real" ("unreal" having different connotations).
ironically, the validity of metaphysics had been largely dismissed earlier in the last century, in favor of empiricism in academic disciplines. much of metaphysics is non-empirical (hence the current tendency to contrast the metaphysical and the physical). we are still seeing the effects of this preference for empirical disciplines today, (although metaphysics seems to be slowly making a come-back). as a result, the term "metaphysical" has become synonymous with my suggested antonym "non-real." nonetheless, i think this is an erroneous idiosyncrasy of our current society and "non-existent" and "non-real" are the best antonyms for "metaphysical."What are some antonyms of the word "metaphysical"?

Do you know any antonyms to the words: quay, brambles, and anoint?
I'm doing vocabulary for a class. I need to find the antonyms for:
Quay
Brambles
Anoint
Thanks!Do you know any antonyms to the words: quay, brambles, and anoint?
There aren't any ( http://www.synonym.com/antonym/ )
antonyms are words opposite in meaning to another. Fast is an antonym of slow.
this usually refers to adjectives - - Good is the opposite of evil.
it's hard to do antonyms for nouns - what's the opposite of bed or desk or stapler? - - see, it makes no sense.
:o)
cliff
velvet
curse
As for libation: abstinence or teetotalling of course.
Take 2. Okay, geniuses: the universal scheme of things is predicated on duality. Each thing is defined by its opposite. Thus light exists only through the opposition of shadow; good, through through the opposition of evil, etc. As words occupy the same universe, the same principle holds. If the dictionary's definition of a word doesn't seem to admit an opposite, one must look beyond the dictionary's denotations, and explore a word's connotations. This substratum of meaning--all that a word implies or symbolizes--will invariably suggest word(s) which symbolize opposite qualities.Do you know any antonyms to the words: quay, brambles, and anoint?
what is a quay? is it a dock?
Brambles... Smooth leaf bush? "smooth rock?"
anoint..... condemn?
Yes, a dock, wharf. Then maybe "an inlet?" A dock sticks out into the water from the land, at an inlet, the land goes in.
And a libation would be some kind of refreshing drink, maybe with the connotation of a blessing? (I didn't look it up)
So, a cup of ashes? A poisonous drink?
The person who wrote that it's hard to find antonyms for these sorts of nouns is right. I'm wondering where are you getting this question?Do you know any antonyms to the words: quay, brambles, and anoint?
quay - quayless
brambles - unwooded treeless
anoint - unanointed
I'm not sure these really have antonyms....quay is a dock of some sort and brambles are thorny bushes....anoint is to bless...

While thesaurus I checked agrees with answerer #1, I disagree with both of them and your teacher as well. Reasoning: a courier is a deliverer or bearer of a message or item; so the question seems to be what is the opposite of delivering or bearing? Is it even possible to undeliver or unbear? I therefore claim that there is no antonym for courier. What are some antonyms of courier?

What are antonyms of SURVEY and SEARCH?
The antonyms for these two wards are hard to come up with, but you can be creative, just explain your reasoning. What are antonyms of SURVEY and SEARCH?
I think a lot of verbs just don't have true antonyms.
I imagine that to have an antonum, their actions would have to be binary or directional operations that are reversible. eg COVER vs UNCOVER, HEAT vs COOL, RAISE vs LOWER
I suppose that since verbs are all 'doing' something, an all-purpose antonym is to NOT do the thing. But that seems kind of boring and useless. eg TALK vs SHUT-UP
If you take SURVEY meaning 'to look at something' then perhaps the antonym could be IGNORE 'to not look at something'.
If you take SEARCH meaning 'to try to find something' then I would go with HIDE or CONCEAL 'to try to stop something from being found'.What are antonyms of SURVEY and SEARCH?
Synonyms for search could be dig, explore, or pursuit therefore an antonym could be to cover, conceal, let go.
For survey how about neglect or ignore if you consider scrutinize as a synonym.

How to memorize vocabulary words and memorize synonyms and antonyms?
Make flash cards! Shuffle them and test yourself. When you have a word memorized put that card in a completed pile. And just keep going over them.
It's not original, but it works.
I started doing this (and the technique below) in college and I went up to a 4.0!
Another (unrelated) study habit that works: if you have a professor that tests on his/her lectures, use two notebooks for the class. One for taking notes in class. Since a lot of the time we use shorthand and abbreviations in order to keep up the lecture, WITHIN 24 HOURS you need to re-write your notes in FULL Sentences without abbreviations in the 2nd notebook. It sounds OCD, but I went from a C and D student to STRAIGHT A's. (The reason this works is because when test time comes around you won't have to figure out what all those abbreviations mean or what that partial sentence was trying to say.)
These work. How to memorize vocabulary words and memorize synonyms and antonyms?

For example, the opposite of light could be either heavy or dark. The opposite of right could be either left or wrong. How many words such as these are there? Is there a label for words that have two or more antonyms which are not synonymous with each other?
No, there isn't.
In your example, "light" has two definitions, so you are really talking about two different words that are homonyms. The antonyms "heavy" and "dark" are antonyms for the two definitions of "light".

Are heyday and doomsday antonyms of one another?
I know doomsday means the end of the world, but is heyday like the happiest day ever? Can you provide an example sentence using heyday, please? Thanks. Are heyday and doomsday antonyms of one another?
Although they have conflicting meanings, they are not antonyms, as doomsday is the end of the world and is a single event that will pass in a complete and finite time period, whereas a heyday is a long and drawn out era during someones life when they are in their prime and at their most popular. For example, when referring to a particular celebrity, you may say: "she was in her heyday in the 1940's", as that was when she was at the height of her fame.lipgloss

Does anyone know of an online Spanish/English Dictionary that gives synonyms and antonyms?
It's for my Spanish II homework. I have a list of about 100 words that are in Spanish that I have to look up what they mean then give their antonym. Please let me know. I've looked on various Spanish/English dictionary sites but none have also let me see the antonym.Does anyone know of an online Spanish/English Dictionary that gives synonyms and antonyms?
All you have to do is take one of those words, assuming you've already translated them. If not, go to a Spanish translator and translate each individual word.
Once you have a word, like, "frio," which means "cold," look up "cold" in an English dictionary to get English antonyms. In this case, "hot" would be included.
Then, go back to the translator, enter "hot," and you get: "caliente"
Do that for each individual word. Once you know the meaning, figure out the opposite and translate that word into Spanish.
Good luck!

What is the difference between antonyms and contrast?
i just need to know the differences for my homework!
thanks!
please answer asap! What is the difference between antonyms and contrast?
contrast:
To show differences when compared (i.e. long hair/ short hair)
antonyms:
A word having a meaning opposite to that of a different word (i.e. hot/cold, wet/dry)
hope this helps!
well when you contrast to different thingd your telling the differences between then. but antonyms are words that are oppisites, like light and dark. but you could contrast almost anything, like for example, if i contrast peanut butter and jelly then one contrastion is that one is brown and the other is either purple or red.
hope this helps you understand better. What is the difference between antonyms and contrast?
antonym is a word opposite in meaning to another. Fast is an antonym of slow.
contrast is to compare in order to show unlikeness or differences; note the opposite natures, purposes, etc., of: Contrast the political rights of Romans and Greeks. What is the difference between antonyms and contrast?
In terms of colours, a contrast could be between black and red or any other distinctly different colour and an antonym would be black and white, because two antonyms are meant to be the opposite of each other.

What are some synonyms and antonyms of the word purveyors?
A "purveyor" is what? Purveyors are the "providers" of goods - a fancy word for a "sellers."
What's the opposite of sellers?
"Buyers" perhaps? "Consumers," maybe?
Hmmmm? What are some synonyms and antonyms of the word purveyors?
I'm not surprised that you can't find antonyms. Nouns rarely have them, and when they exist they are pretty weak. In the case of purveyors, you might use "consumers." I think it is an example of a weak antonym because if I were asked for an antonym of "consumers," I would think of "producers" before "purveyors."What are some synonyms and antonyms of the word purveyors?

How the heck am I supposed to find antonyms for these words?
My History teacher gave us a definition project. We have to find the definition, synonym, antonym, and draw a pictures for 30 words.
But, some of the words are like New England, tariff, economy, debt, and minutemen! How do you find antonyms for words like that? How the heck am I supposed to find antonyms for these words?
Here are the antonyms you requested:
New England: England (as in the country with London as its capital - you might call it "old England")
Tariff: Export subsidy
Economy: Wastefulness (that is, if "economy" is defined as frugality and efficiency in the expenditure of money or resources)
Debt: Credit
Minutemen: You got me there. Maybe soldiers on leave who aren't ready at a minute's notice for battle.
I hope this helps. If not, you can always check out http://thesaurus.reference.com which also has synonyms and antonyms. It's a good resource which I often use myself.

If you don't find something there then just fake it. An antonym only has to be the opposite in one aspect. How the heck am I supposed to find antonyms for these words?
I would just leave that part out and do the rest of the question. How the heck am I supposed to find antonyms for these words?

antonym means opposite so imagine you are alice through the looking glass and need to find an objects opposite. New england was ...what? synonym means same might be what other ner world colonly was being founded by england. New or Old England with maps insteaad of other illustratioons SAme with tariff "tariffs taxes on every deliscious goodie that crossed the ocean then what does a smuggler do".. "economyeconomy might be what happened to roanoke "perhaps debt what emphasis did debt have upon new england was it about bond servants " "minutemen what was their opposite numbers in battle"
No offense to your teacher, but that is a pretty lame assignment. New England: ant.- England; Tariff: syn-tax ant.-free trade; Debt: syn-deficit ant.-surplus; minutemen: syn-militia, ant.-English army (red coats). I don't know if those are great matches, but I'm guessing not many people in your class will have anything much better.
